Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

During the process of creating the magazine i have learnt a variety of skills. When we first began the process we had to create a college magazine and my creative skills with the technology was not good at all. My magazine picture was taken with a phone camera and simple fonts were on it too. My music magazine was just made up of a front cover, no dps or contents page. My colour scheme was not good either as it was blue and yellow which didn't look appealing and seemed very blunt. My music magazine was so much better than my college one as the images were taken in the photography studio and i used the spot healing tool and interesting fonts. the colour scheme was much more appealing and suited my music genre very well. My music magazine also contained a contents page and dps which completed the whole task. I took my feedback of my college magazine into consideration and used it to make my music magazine look better. My music magazine was also better because i had gotten used to the technologies so i knew how to edit and crop photos and move words and change fonts. My skills definitely improved whilst creating my music magazine.
Question 6

What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the process of creating this product, I used many technologies such as Indesign, Blogger ,In-Design, Time Toast, Photoshop and the photography studio. I also used microsoft word for drafts and powerpoint to create my pitch for my magazine. In the beginning i used simple technologies such as my iphone. When it got to about a couple weeks into the process, i used a DLSR camera which allowed my photos to come out more clear. I used photoshop to make my images more professional and 'sharp'. Indesign is used in the industry which is why i used it to create my magazine. It allows you to create collumns which are identical and straight as it contains grids and rulers. I used indesign to create my contents page. I used Blogger to blog everything i had completed within the lesson, to basically show my progress and receive feedback. Illustrator allows you to create unique mastheads. The photography studio allows you to get a variety of professional photos in both colour and monochrome. It also allows you to use resources such as black and white backdrops and silver and gold reflectors to create a soft glow. The DSLR camera allows you to take professional images with no blurriness.
Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

My magazine contained something called 'Past Box' which was an idea i had come up with. It showed an artist's song lyrics before it was edited and produced into the official song. I decided to include this in my magazine so it would stand out and attract the reader to read more in the magazine. This also allows the reader to know more about their favourite artist's and previous ideas they had before they came up with the final piece. I provided information which would attract both genders. I kept my colour scheme simple so it would look professional, so on, i used a vibrant pink for my masthead and certain coverlines to attract the audience and catch their eye. I included questions in my magazine which a fan may have asked and also included advice and compliments for the artist.

I received audience feedback for my magazine, i found it very helpful as it allowed me to make changes and improve on my housestyle particularly. Most of my feedback was positive, mostly about the fonts and colour scheme. I had to include more information in my magazine as it was a monthly but came across as a weekly as it contained very few pages. The feedback was very useful as it allowed me to improve and make a better magazine.
Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My magazine was aimed at both males and females between the ages of 18-34. The main ethnicity which would be interested in my magazine would probably be black african/americans because they were seen to be the main readers of r&b magazines in XXL/Vibe's media kits. My audience would be working/middle class as my magazine cost around 3 pounds. This is suitable for these two classes as they have disposable income and are interested in this genre of music.
Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Dennis publishing would distribute my magazine because they are known to publish magazines and are very popular. They promote their products using social media sites, meaning almost everyone is able to access it and see what is on offer. This would promote sales and probably allow my magazine to get noticed by the public. Due to Dennis publishing promoting their products online, this would mean my magazine wouldnt only be in stores, it would also be on the internet and apps.

My product would be sold in local newsagents and supermarkets as a wide range of people access these places, meaning there would be a big chance of my magazine being noticed and possibly purchased. I think my magazine would be a success as it involves its readers in competitions and allows them to be involved within the actual magazine as i have a page for the readers, this would boost sales.
Question 2

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product is a music magazine. The genre of music i decided to base my magazine on was hip hop/r&b. During my research i discovered that most r&b/hip hop magazines were made up of vibrant colours, bold headings and mainly female models on the front. My magazine was inspired by XXL as i found that it was unique. They mainly had black and white images instead of bright coloured images, this gave a mysterious but sophisticated theme to the magazine.

Images: My magazine contained both coloured and black and white images. I used a black and white image for my front cover so the masthead stood out. My images were original as i wanted my magazine to be different so readers would be pulled in.

Colour Scheme: i used 3 colours for my magazine- black, white and pink.  I decided to use pink because it stood out and was very vibrant against the black and white images.

Coverlines: I decided to make my coverlines short so the front cover wouldn't look cluttered. Also, most people like more images rather than writing which is why i limited the amount of writing on my front cover. I made my coverlines seem very intriguing by including up to date information which would be relevant to my audience.

Layout; I used a simple layout so it would be clear for the reader. I didnt want to use too much of a simple layout as i wanted to keep the reader interested and wanted my magazine to be original.
